That's impressive, just had a look at the website and this leaves water ready to drink without any further treatment necessary. It has been certified by the WHO and has been designed to be used for situations like natural disasters. It's deliberately low tech, low cost and easy to use.

The additive kills or removes most harmful bacteria. This product has been used for decades in places with very polluted water, or very limited water sources that aren’t normally drinkable. Also the bag has a filter on the nozzle that is pretty close to the life straws filters. The water after the second treatment was likely drinkable.

For those wondering this process is called Coagulation. The product/substance he added is known as allum and it makes the molecules of dirt clump together thought the attraction of the molecules. Basically, the dirt particles clump together forming one big molecule which then settles at the bottom through Sedimentation.

Nice job. What kind of polymer or coagulant did you use? I'm guessing by the color that most of the makeup of solids is iron. Genuinely curious. Edit- Moreso interested in the ingredients and molecular makeup of the solution.

People. This is a really helpful product. Yes it doesn't remove all the small bacteria in the water (tho it does include chlorine in it to help with that) , but it gets rid of all the dirt and now you have clear water you can boil to starilize it!

@Kristý Shemley Why do you all always refer to Africa when trying to make a statement about "poor and poverty"?? If you've never been to Africa don't speak on it. Africa is a continent not country so what Africa are you referring too? You do know there are lands with no running water, bad water etc in Eastern countries and right here in Good ole America.. stop using Africa as your example, Africa is really rich and no there isn't running water all over but living in the village isn't horrible as you think..

what is going on at the chemical level is that polysaccharides with amino groups can protonate neutral water if the pKa is right. Once this occurs then the polysaccharides work as a bioadhesive and coagulates the dirt similar process can occur with aluminum sulfate. For my undergrad project, I tried to clean dirty water using grounded seeds as a green approach. Chitosan is widely used for lowering turbidity and is very effective the problem is that most chitosan comes from the shells of crustaceans or filter feeders.
