It is really hard for a gar to die from a fishook like that. It would rust and fall out eventually. The gar would live on.

Some fishies in the Great South raise them for their meat production. They're in about all lakes and rivers in Texas. An interesting line of fish, the Spotted, Shortnose, Longnose, and Alligator Gar. First one I saw took my breath away. Largest caught on record in Texas is 302 LBs. In 1953. May they live forever. Blessings
