Hey John, would it be financially and administratively possible for you and your Team to build up a "what happend sice" website, where news or articles are listed which are linked to specific previously produced episodes? All of your topics are extremely important and it would be great to have an easy and source-approved way to keep on track with them. Greetings from germany.

@AnderPodd I said it wasn't cheap. But I'm mostly saying we can't let cost can't be a barrier to good public health. I feel like people invested in public health say so much about how _hard_ our mission is, they forget the _actual_ *mission* of public health doesn't really add the caveat "unless it's difficult to manage with our resources." So don't stop with the caveat and keep patching a bad system of sharing health information: put real, strategic effort into making it better. And then making it outstanding. If public health professionals can't get the job well, then we need to change our approach to _get_ the resources we need to get the job done well. I'm just tired of the conversation saying why it's hard instead of it being about how we overcome that difficulty.

@Shalvus Again, I disagree, since to access the data from a traditional fax machine requires actual access to the physical plant, while a typical phishing scheme requires no physical presence. It is through customer ineptitude regarding data security that many breaches occur. Also, there are many flavors of "fax". I am specifically referring to traditional voice-frequency fax machines, not to devices which use an internet-based protocol.

John should do a show on just this. I really don't think people understand how heavy the fax is still used, especially in healthcare.

@Ben Holland I think we need to define our terms. When I say "fax", I am talking about traditional fax machines, which are connected to the switched telephony network via land lines. To intercept such a transmission requires access to the physical plant. This is not trivial, especially if one is going to attempt it without discovery. [Also, traditional fax data is not in any "cleartext" format.] And finally there is the question of the value of the data in question. Who is going to risk being uncovered in the commission of a felony crime, just to intercept a medical record fax? How often do you suppose this occurs?

Hey, I'm a molecular scientist and am validating a monkey pox test for multiple private labs across the country. There IS an early detection test where you test blood. HOWEVER, once pox start appearing (some ppl have mild symptoms and it may not be ass apparent) it's not really detectable that way and can cause false negative results. Theres just a window where it shifts to pox that causes us issues. Unfortunately our labs arent able to participate in research to test other sample collection processes. Next time I get a fever I'll swab myself in every way I can think though to give us a justifiable direction if it is mpxv though.

Yeah, in research science here. I was helping with the initial SARS CoV 2 rapid tests. Those first few months were critical and CDC jamned the gates with their faulty tests. They're still not being used the way they should.. 😒 Very little learning opportunities took place in our public health sector during Covid (and that's still actively something to be concerned about).

@Leonardo Montalvo But...that is an ideology. You're choosing to avoid something that reduces your risk of an outcome because in your world view the numbers are acceptable. Your ideology informs what you consider a low enough probability, and which of those probabilities you're willing to gamble on. Don't have to have the same ideology as someone else to arrive at the same conclusion either. You might not believe there's tracking microchips in the vaccines, but you're making the same decision as that guy in the end.

One good thing is that it might shed some light on the disease. It can help others to understand it. With kids, that will take away much of the fear that results in teasing/rejection by peers. And that will probably help younger kids with the disease to not be as self conscious. I now know what the man in my store has and that automatically made me feel like I could relate to him better. (Not sure why.) I guess that's just what light does.

It's worth saying that one of the biggest vaccine problems in the US is also true of the endemic region for monkeypox: the Jynneos vaccine is far less available and is a necessity for people living with HIV to get, as the larger stockpile is not safe for *immunocompromised* people, even though it is safe for the general population. The 20M doses were largely this older, more limited vaccine which would have been difficult to roll out as well in Africa due to the impact of the HIV pandemic there. This is the same reason, Fauci has said, that there was difficulty in getting vaccines to the US, since the Jynneos vaccine is the one necessary for an outbreak in a community heavily impacted by HIV. That said, every Jynneos vaccine sitting on a shelf should have been in Nigeria and there should have been massive public investment in growing the manufacturing capacity Jynneos had well before now.

Like always, we here have to wait just a short time, until we are exactly at the same place, where the USA are currently. As well as the Americans, we have nothing learned from the corona virus pandemic, our doctor's offices and health authorities are badly managed and also badly connected to each other. And as in the US, nobody in our current government seems to realy care about the upcoming monkeypox pandemic, since everyone is quite tired from covid and would rather handle something other than another pandemic. So, in 1 or 2 months from now, we might also have as high case numbers as in the US - but at least the Heuteshow will have ended their summer hiatus and we will all be able to laugh about it, of course unless we have monkeypox, because lauging while sitting on broken glas sounds realy painful.

Certainly more likely to be incompetence, but also remember that corporations aren't people, unless you're the CEO a single person won't have much say in how the company is run and even if you wish to do good deeds, they still have costs/liability to deal with. That's why stores don't give away free food to the homeless for example, first they have to pay for someone to deal with that food and donate it, then they can also potentially be held liable should someone get sick from it, so from a company perspective, why bother and why try to change anything? Basically the same reasons nobody recycles in most of the US, trash pickup has already been paid for making it "free" but if you want to do the right thing, you have to pay a company extra for recycle pickup, so who is going to ever do that? Then on top of that recycling doesn't make enough money, so for years we've just shipped most of it off to other countries to do the recycling for us.

I feel like people with anxiety disorders would be great for preparing for this kind of disaster: we'd see all the potential for things to go wrong and have a million backups for every scenario. Of course, we'd need money and willingness to put those into place and yes, probably someone to reign us in a teeeeeny bit.

6 сағат бұрын
Rua O'Neill
Rua O'Neill

@Nils P sort of. If you look at it through a societal lens though, circumstances have a lot to do with what constitutes a disability or not. Obviously when everything is clearly fine and safw but you're still worrying about things that either will probably never happen or things that even if they did happen they're not actually that big a deal, to tge point where you can't live a happy and fulfilling life then that's a disorder. But if you were in a position where it's your job to think through all the worst possible scenarios and how to deal with them, then having anxiety could actually be a benefit to your job. It's just an idea. I don't know if actual research has been done. I have anxiety meself and have had this thought for a while but since the pandemic it's been at the forefront of me mind more often.

@Nils P I mean yes, but that doesn't mean people with anxiety don't ever use their anxious thoughts to prepare for something that could actually happen. I'm a pretty anxious person, and when I was in childcare that translated into being prepared for emergency situations. I have taken classes to prepare so that I can feel less anxious about a situation happening and I map out situations in my head pretty regularly to prepare for emergencies. Is it exhausting and most of the time completely unnecessary? Absolutely. But has it also helped in emergency situations before, or prevented what could have become an emergency? Also yes. Just because anxiety mostly has a negative impact on people's lives doesn't mean it ALWAYS has a negative impact on peoples lives. Its all about how you cope and prioritize the scenarios running through your head.

Yeah, I've thought this same thing since Jan 20, 2020. Where are the public health officials who think of every possibility then hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Every anxious person I know would have thought through the expiring Smallpox vaccine - it would be a no-brainer to forward it onto outbreaks. Basic virology and good sense should tell you this. Ugh..😒 A well-informed, honest anxious person is the "Survivor" of the 10-80-10 principle.

Three years ago (it was the day after Thanksgiving 2019), I picked up a rattlesnake I found in my driveway. It bit me, I then spent three days in the hospital, and I almost died. It was the most painful experience of my life! Now, did people show compassion toward me during this time? Of course they did, as they should have. While I was in the hospital, did I deserve good health care and treatment? Yes, and I got it, thankfully. I was treated well and I was well taken care of, just as I think anyone deserves to be who is going through a medical condition, regardless of how the condition came about. However... All this being said, there's no denying that it was MY FAULT I was in the hospital. And I learned my lesson. Do you think I will pick up a rattlesnake again anytime soon? Hell no!!!! And I will encourage everyone I know to not pick up a rattlesnake. Now, this may be bigoted to say. One could argue, "Telling people to not pick up rattlesnakes is prejudice against snake enthusiasts!" Sure, it may be prejudice. But it's also SMART!!! Quit picking up rattlesnakes, people!!!!!

I appreciate the comprehensive breakdown as always. However I'm curious as to why the official who made the comment about bowling was thought of as bad? Even to the point where the openly gay official made fun of him and all of straight sex and then proceeded to warn people. Albeit his warning was more specific, but still it just made the gay official seem like a petty asshole. Again maybe there is more context I'm missing but I believe if his intention was to help then don't insult the guy and then turn around and do essentially the same thing. Because if it's confirmed spreading then yes abstinence will work and is fine as a recommendation. Having a psa about safe sex play is good too just not as safe. Both are good advice and I think they would both be served better in their message if they practiced unity and cooperation.
